Pears are so tender that they were once called the "butter fruit."
Pioneers used as much of the pear as possible. They ate it, used the juice for cider, made furniture from the wood and created yellow dye from the leaves.
The pear is related to the rose and originates in Eastern Asia. It's thousands of years old and has produced literally thousands of varieties of itself.
It's one of the first fruits to be brought to North America from Europe. Pear trees were growing 350 years ago in the Massachusetts Bay colony.
